Currently, the global rate of biodiversity decline is alarming and the consequential impacts to essential ecosystem functions is unknown. I provide a framework for linking biodiversity across scales, from phylogenetic diversity to functional diversity within ecosystems, to explore patterns of community assembly and biodiversity loss across communities and the impacts on ecosystem function.
