The Blount Lighthouse lecture series is a forum where students meet and interact with faculty from all over the University campus. Our aim is to introduce Blount students to faculty and disciplines they otherwise might never encounter in their time at UA, foster more informed communication about the opportunities the University of Alabama has to offer, introduce the UA faculty to our amazing Blount students, and to promote the Blount Scholars Program. The Disappearing Act, won the Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry and was published by Mercer University Press in 2018. In 2019, she was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year in Poetry. Her short story, “Word Problems,” won first place in the Chestnut Review‘s 2020 Stubborn Writers contest, and her poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, the Best of the Net Anthology, and the Independent Best American Poetry Award. She has published in dozens of literary journals under the name Sara Pirkle Hughes, including Rattle, Reed, Rosebud, TAB, Atlanta Review, Southern Women’s Review, Review Americana, and Atticus Review, among others. She has also received writing fellowships from The Anderson Center, I-Park Foundation, and The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. Sara earned a PhD in English from Georgia State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Georgia College & State University. She is the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Creative Writing at The University of Alabama, where she also directs the Pure Products Reading & Lecture Series.
